How-to
Find quick wins with the opportunity matrix
Use the Strategy tab to spot high-volume keywords where you rank poorly.
The Strategy tab of the Keyword Monitor holds one card: the Opportunity matrix. It plots every tracked keyword so you can see where effort pays off.
Read the chart
Section titled “Read the chart”- Open Keyword Monitor → Strategy.
- Set the date range and the other filters in the filter bar.
- Read the axes:
- X — Monthly search volume (log).
- Y — Your SERP position (1 = best).
- Bubble size is the CPC of the keyword. Bubble colour is its search intent.
Use the quadrants
Section titled “Use the quadrants”| Quadrant | Meaning | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Cash cows | High volume, top rank | Defend the position |
| Quick wins | High volume, low rank | Your best targets — small gains move real traffic |
| Niche champions | Low volume, top rank | Keep, but expect little growth |
| Don’t bother | Low volume, low rank | Leave alone |
Each bubble also carries an uplift figure: the estimated yearly opportunity if that keyword moved to position 1.
Open a keyword
Section titled “Open a keyword”Click a bubble to go to that keyword’s detail page.
When the chart is empty
Section titled “When the chart is empty”The matrix says “Awaiting search volume and SERP data.” when it has nothing to plot. Bubbles appear once a keyword has both a search volume and a tracked position. Note that:
- Keywords without a search volume yet are left out, because they have no X coordinate.
- Keywords where your brand is not in the top 20 are plotted at position 21, as absent.
- Your project needs at least one own brand; without one the matrix stays empty.
- The chart shows the top 200 keywords by search volume.
